Queensland has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Our warm climate and high UV exposure mean that years of sun damage can accumulate silently, often without obvious warning signs until a concern becomes more serious. Regular skin checks with an experienced GP are one of the most important and proactive steps you can take for your long-term health. Our team is here to help you stay ahead of it.
Next Practice Newstead is proud to have a dedicated and highly credentialled team of GPs with a genuine interest and expertise in skin health.
Dr Wayne Lee is the Clinical Director of Next Practice Newstead and a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). Dr Lee completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland, having received the University Medal for Outstanding Research in Biochemistry, followed by a Master of Biotechnology with Distinction at the Australian National University. He brings broad clinical experience across general practice, preventive health, chronic disease management, and cancer screening, and is known for his holistic, collaborative approach to care. Dr Lee supports patients in building structured, long-term health programs personalised to their goals — integrating preventive care, cancer screening, and lifestyle interventions into a plan that works for them. He consults in English, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Hokkien.
Dr Wesley Chan is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and a Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr Chan completed a biochemistry degree in Hong Kong before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 2012. He has a special clinical interest in skin cancer medicine and weight management, and brings considerable expertise in both surgical and non-surgical approaches to skin cancer detection and management. Dr Chan has worked with patients of a wide range of ethnicities and backgrounds, and is passionate about delivering care that is thorough, personalised, and sensitive to each individual's needs and goals. He consults in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
Dr Daryna Rudolph brings expertise, precision, and a thorough patient-centred approach to skin cancer detection and the management of dermatological concerns. Dr Rudolph is experienced in conducting comprehensive full-body skin checks and performing minor skin procedures in clinic, ensuring patients can access high-quality skin care conveniently, without the wait times typically associated with specialist referrals.
Our skin health team provides a comprehensive range of services for patients across Brisbane's inner north and CBD.
Full body skin checks involve a thorough head-to-toe examination of your skin to identify any lesions, moles, or changes that may require monitoring, further investigation, or treatment. We take our time with every skin check — nothing is rushed, and nothing is overlooked.
Skin cancer detection and assessment includes clinical evaluation of suspicious lesions such as moles, spots, and growths, with dermoscopy used where appropriate to support accurate and detailed diagnosis.
Surgical skin cancer removal is available for lesions requiring surgical management, performed under local anaesthetic in our purpose-built treatment room by our experienced GPs, allowing prompt, high-quality care without the delays of specialist waitlists.
Non-surgical treatments for skin cancer and skin damage are also available where clinically appropriate, offering patients a broader range of management options tailored to their individual circumstances.
Skin biopsies can be performed in clinic where a lesion requires further investigation. A small tissue sample is taken for pathological analysis, helping to confirm or rule out a diagnosis with confidence.
Minor skin surgical procedures including removal of skin lesions, moles, cysts, and other dermatological concerns are performed under local anaesthetic in our treatment room, allowing concerns to be addressed promptly and comfortably at our Newstead clinic.
Referrals to dermatologists and specialist surgeons are arranged promptly where a lesion or diagnosis requires management beyond the scope of general practice. Our team works with a network of trusted dermatologists and skin cancer specialists to ensure seamless, timely onward care.
Skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, is highly manageable when identified at an early stage. Regular skin checks with a GP experienced in skin cancer detection give you the best opportunity to catch any changes early, when the range of available options is widest.
We encourage all Queensland residents — particularly those with fair skin, a history of significant sun exposure, or a personal or family history of skin cancer — to include regular skin checks as part of their ongoing preventive health routine.
We encourage you to book an appointment if you have not had a skin check in the past twelve months, if you have noticed a new or changing mole, spot, or lesion, if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer or melanoma, if you have a history of significant sun exposure or sunburn, or if you have fair skin, light eyes, or red or blonde hair, which are associated with increased skin cancer risk.
If you notice a lesion that is changing rapidly, bleeding, or causing you concern, please contact our clinic promptly to arrange an early appointment.
New and existing patients are always welcome. To book a skin check or skin procedure with Dr Wayne Lee, Dr Wesley Chan, or Dr Daryna Rudolph, or to speak with one of our Patient Advocates about our skin health services, book online or contact Next Practice Newstead today.
