What Is Antenatal Shared Care?

Antenatal Shared Care is a collaborative model of pregnancy care between your GP and your maternity hospital. Routine antenatal appointments are shared between your hospital team and an accredited GP provider.

As a registered Antenatal Shared Care Provider, Dr Marija Lugonja works closely with participating Brisbane hospitals to provide antenatal care in accordance with recognised clinical guidelines and shared care protocols.

This model allows many routine pregnancy appointments to be conducted at our Fortitude Valley clinic while maintaining ongoing communication with your hospital maternity team.

Benefits of Antenatal Shared Care

Many women choose Antenatal Shared Care because it offers:

  • Continuity of care with a GP who is familiar with your medical history and pregnancy journey
  • Convenient access to pregnancy care closer to home or work
  • Flexible appointment scheduling through a local Brisbane GP clinic
  • Ongoing support for general health concerns alongside antenatal care
  • Coordination between your GP and hospital maternity team throughout your pregnancy

What Happens During Antenatal Shared Care Appointments?

During your antenatal appointments, Dr Lugonja may:

  • Monitor your blood pressure and overall wellbeing
  • Review pathology results and pregnancy-related investigations
  • Assess your baby's growth and development
  • Discuss pregnancy symptoms and any concerns you may have
  • Provide information about pregnancy, birth preparation, and postnatal care
  • Liaise with your hospital maternity team when required

The timing and frequency of appointments will follow the recommendations of your participating hospital and current antenatal care guidelines.

Is Antenatal Shared Care Right for You?

Antenatal Shared Care may be suitable for women with uncomplicated pregnancies who meet the eligibility criteria of their chosen maternity hospital. Your GP and hospital team will assess your individual circumstances and discuss the most appropriate model of care for your pregnancy.

If you are unsure whether shared antenatal care is suitable for you, our team can provide further information during your consultation. If shared care isn't the right fit, we're also able to support preconception planning and general pregnancy care as part of our broader women's health services.
