We understand that LGBTQIA+ individuals face unique health challenges and have often had experiences with healthcare that have felt dismissive, uncomfortable, or simply not designed for them. At Next Practice Newstead, we are actively working to be different. Our GPs are experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about providing healthcare that meets the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ patients with the respect, cultural sensitivity, and clinical thoroughness that every person deserves.
You will never be misgendered here. You will never be made to feel that your identity is an obstacle to your care. You will be met with openness, warmth, and a team that is fully invested in your health and wellbeing.
Our GPs provide comprehensive, affirming healthcare across a broad range of areas relevant to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Gender affirming care involves supportive, informed, and respectful care for transgender and gender diverse patients navigating their healthcare journey. Our GPs provide a safe space to discuss your health needs, provide referrals to appropriate specialists including endocrinologists and gender clinics, support mental health and wellbeing, and coordinate your broader healthcare in a way that is always affirming and respectful of your identity and goals. We understand that access to knowledgeable, affirming primary care is one of the most important determinants of health and quality of life for transgender and gender diverse individuals, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Sexual health services include comprehensive, confidential STI screening and testing, HIV prevention through Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) assessment, hepatitis screening and vaccination, and management of sexual health concerns - all provided in a genuinely non-judgmental and affirming environment. Our GPs are experienced in the specific sexual health needs of LGBTQIA+ patients and provide care that is both clinically thorough and culturally sensitive.
Mental health support recognises that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns, often as a result of minority stress, discrimination, family rejection, and the challenges of navigating identity in environments that are not always supportive. Our GPs and in-house psychologist provide compassionate, affirming mental health assessment, support, and referral, and can develop a GP Mental Health Care Plan to support access to Medicare-rebated psychological sessions where eligible.
Preventive health and health assessments are provided with an understanding of the specific health risks and screening needs relevant to LGBTQIA+ patients, including cardiovascular health, cancer screening, sexual health monitoring, and mental health and wellbeing. Our GPs take a proactive, holistic approach to preventive care that is informed by and responsive to the unique health profile of each individual patient.
Chronic disease management for LGBTQIA+ patients is delivered with an understanding of the ways in which social determinants of health, lived experience, and identity can intersect with long-term health conditions. Our GPs provide ongoing, coordinated chronic disease management that is always person-centred and affirming.
Relationships, family, and reproductive health consultations are available for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples navigating fertility, family planning, contraception, and reproductive health decisions. Our GPs provide informed, respectful, and non-judgmental guidance across all aspects of reproductive and family health for LGBTQIA+ patients.
Alcohol and other drug support is available for patients who would like to discuss their relationship with alcohol or other substances in a safe, non-judgmental, and affirming environment. Our GPs provide evidence-based assessment, brief intervention, and referral to appropriate support services where needed.
Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals who have access to affirming, knowledgeable healthcare experience better health outcomes, are more likely to engage with preventive health services, and report higher levels of trust and satisfaction with their care. Conversely, experiences of discrimination, dismissiveness, or lack of knowledge in healthcare settings are significant barriers to LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking the care they need.
At Next Practice Newstead, we are committed to being a clinic where every LGBTQIA+ patient feels safe, seen, and fully supported. We invest in ensuring our team has the knowledge, sensitivity, and cultural awareness to provide care that genuinely meets the needs of our LGBTQIA+ community - and we hold ourselves to a high standard in doing so.
Next Practice Newstead is a Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ patients. Our entire team - GPs, allied health practitioners, nursing staff, and Patient Advocates - is committed to maintaining an environment that is welcoming, respectful, and free from discrimination for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics, or relationship structure.
We actively empower all practitioners at our clinic to uphold and strengthen this commitment, and we welcome feedback from our LGBTQIA+ patients about how we can continue to improve the quality and inclusivity of the care we provide.
Our commitment to LGBTQIA+ health extends beyond the consulting room. We are passionate about community outreach, about reducing health inequities, and about ensuring that every person in our community - including those who have historically faced barriers to accessing safe and affirming healthcare - knows that quality, respectful care is available to them at Next Practice Newstead.
