LGBTQIA+ health - Newstead, Fortitude Valley & Brisbane CBD

Inclusive, affirming, and genuinely respectful healthcare for the LGBTQIA+ community

At Next Practice Newstead, we are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and affirming healthcare environment for all people, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and all other sexual orientations, sex characteristics, and gender identities. We welcome patients from Newstead, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane CBD, New Farm, Teneriffe, Bowen Hills, Spring Hill, Hamilton, Albion, Herston, Newmarket, South Brisbane, the Gabba, and the broader Brisbane inner-city community, with free on-site parking available.

We understand that LGBTQIA+ individuals face unique health challenges and have often had experiences with healthcare that have felt dismissive or simply not designed for them. Our GPs are experienced and genuinely committed to providing healthcare that meets the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ patients with respect, cultural sensitivity, and clinical thoroughness.

Our whole team is trained to provide affirming, respectful care, and we welcome feedback from our LGBTQIA+ patients about how we can continue to improve.

LGBTQIA+ Health Services at Next Practice Newstead

Gender affirming care: supportive, informed care for transgender and gender diverse patients. Our GPs provide a safe space to discuss your health needs, coordinate referrals to endocrinologists and gender clinics where needed, and support your broader healthcare in a way that is affirming of your identity and goals.

Sexual health: comprehensive, confidential STI screening, HIV prevention through PrEP and PEP, and hepatitis screening and vaccination, delivered in a non-judgmental and affirming environment. See our dedicated Sexual Health page for full detail.

Mental health support: our GPs and in-house psychologist provide affirming mental health assessment and support, recognising the higher rates of anxiety and depression LGBTQIA+ individuals experience due to minority stress and discrimination. See our dedicated Mental Health page for full detail.

Preventive health and health assessments: informed by the specific health risks and screening needs relevant to LGBTQIA+ patients. See our dedicated Preventive Health page for full detail.

Chronic disease management: delivered with an understanding of how social determinants of health and identity intersect with long-term conditions. See our dedicated Chronic Disease Management page for full detail.

Relationships, family, and reproductive health: consultations for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples navigating fertility, family planning, and reproductive health decisions, with informed, non-judgmental guidance.

Alcohol and other drug support: evidence-based assessment, brief intervention, and referral for patients who want to discuss their relationship with alcohol or other substances in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Why Affirming Care Matters

Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals who have access to affirming, knowledgeable healthcare experience better health outcomes, are more likely to engage with preventive health services, and report higher levels of trust and satisfaction with their care. Experiences of discrimination or dismissiveness in healthcare settings remain a significant barrier to LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking the care they need.

We invest in ensuring our team has the knowledge and cultural awareness to provide care that genuinely meets the needs of our LGBTQIA+ community.

A Safe Space

Next Practice Newstead is a Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ patients. Our entire team, GPs, allied health practitioners, nursing staff, and Patient Advocates, is committed to an environment that is welcoming and free from discrimination for all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, sex characteristics, or relationship structure.

We welcome feedback from our LGBTQIA+ patients about how we can continue to improve the quality and inclusivity of care we provide.

Our Commitment to the Community

Our commitment to LGBTQIA+ health extends beyond the consulting room. We are passionate about community outreach and reducing health inequities, ensuring that quality, respectful care is available to everyone in our community.

We are proud to serve the LGBTQIA+ communities of Newstead, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane CBD, New Farm, Teneriffe, Bowen Hills, Spring Hill, Hamilton, Albion, Herston, Newmarket, South Brisbane, and the Gabba.
