At Next Practice Newstead, we believe strongly in the value of preventive health care. Regular health assessments allow your GP to identify potential health concerns early, before symptoms develop, and to put in place the support and management strategies that give you the best chance of a long and healthy life. Prevention is always better than cure, and a health assessment is one of the most important investments you can make in your long-term wellbeing.
A health assessment is a structured, comprehensive review of your overall health conducted by your GP. It goes well beyond a standard consultation, your GP will take the time to examine a broad range of health indicators, review your medical and family history, assess your lifestyle and risk factors, and identify any areas of concern that may benefit from further investigation or early intervention.
Health assessments are not about finding problems, they are about understanding where you are right now, and ensuring you have the right support and information to stay as well as possible going forward.
While the specific components of your health assessment will be tailored to your age, health history, and individual circumstances, a comprehensive assessment at Next Practice Newstead will typically include a review of your current health status and any existing medical conditions; assessment of cardiovascular risk factors including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose; discussion of your family history and any hereditary health risks; a review of your lifestyle factors including diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking status; a mental health and wellbeing check; a review of your current medications and immunisation status; and where appropriate, referrals for further investigations such as blood tests, skin checks, or specialist consultations.
Following your assessment, your GP will discuss the findings with you, answer any questions you may have, and work with you to develop a personalised preventive health plan tailored to your needs and goals.
Medicare-funded health assessments are available to patients in specific eligible age groups. At Next Practice Newstead, bulk billed health assessments are available for existing patients who fall within these groups, including patients aged 45 to 49 who are at risk of developing a chronic condition; patients aged 75 years and over; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients aged 18 years and over.
If you are aged over 40, you may also be eligible for an assessment, please contact the clinic to discuss your individual circumstances and confirm your eligibility before booking.
Health assessments at Next Practice Newstead are available to existing patients. If you are new to the clinic, our team can assist you in becoming an established patient so you can access these services.
Many serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and kidney disease, develop gradually and may not produce noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular health assessments give your GP the opportunity to detect early warning signs, address modifiable risk factors, and connect you with the right support before a condition becomes more serious or difficult to manage.
For patients managing existing chronic conditions, a health assessment also provides a valuable opportunity to review the effectiveness of your current management plan and make adjustments where needed.
We recommend discussing with your GP how frequently a health assessment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
