Our Doctors and team of nurses at Next Practice Newstead specialise in intravenous iron infusions. Our state-of-the art clinic holds your health
Next Practice Newstead operates a dedicated iron infusion clinic, offering intravenous (IV) iron infusions administered by our experienced GPs and nursing team at our clinic on Wickham Street, Fortitude Valley, conveniently located for residents of Newstead, Teneriffe, New Farm, Bowen Hills, Spring Hill, and the broader Brisbane inner-north.
Our state-of-the-art clinic is purpose-built with your health, comfort, and safety as the priority. Whether you have been referred by a specialist or your regular GP has identified low iron or iron deficiency anaemia, our team is here to provide safe, clinically supervised infusion care in a welcoming environment, without the need for a hospital admission.
An intravenous iron infusion is a medical procedure in which iron is delivered directly into the bloodstream via a drip. It is typically recommended when oral iron supplementation has been ineffective, poorly tolerated, or when iron levels need to be restored more rapidly than tablets can achieve.
Iron infusions are a well-established and highly effective treatment for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia, and are commonly used for a wide range of patients across different life stages and health circumstances.
Iron infusions are frequently recommended for patients who are unable to absorb iron adequately through diet or oral supplements; experience side effects from oral iron such as nausea, constipation, or gastrointestinal discomfort; have iron deficiency associated with pregnancy, heavy menstrual bleeding, or post-partum recovery; are managing a chronic condition such as inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure; are preparing for or recovering from surgery; or have iron deficiency anaemia that has not responded to oral treatment.
Your GP will assess your iron studies, full blood count, and overall health before recommending an infusion and determining the most appropriate iron formulation and dose for your needs.
At Next Practice Newstead, iron infusions are administered by our nursing team under the supervision of our experienced GPs in a safe, monitored clinical environment. You can expect the following during your visit:
A pre-infusion consultation to confirm your suitability and review your most recent blood results. Placement of a small cannula in your arm through which the iron solution is delivered intravenously. A monitoring period during and after the infusion to observe for any reactions and ensure your safety and comfort. Post-infusion care advice and a follow-up blood test timeline to assess your response to treatment.
Infusion appointments typically take between one and four hours depending on the formulation used. We recommend bringing something to read, listen to, or watch to make your time with us as comfortable as possible.
The health and safety of our patients is our highest priority. All iron infusions at Next Practice Newstead are performed in strict accordance with current clinical guidelines, with resuscitation equipment and trained staff on hand throughout every infusion. Our clinic maintains the highest standards of infection control and clinical governance, ensuring every patient receives safe, evidence-based care.
You do not necessarily need a specialist referral to access iron infusion services at Next Practice Newstead. If you are an existing patient, your GP can assess your iron levels and refer you internally. If you have been referred by an external specialist or GP, our team will liaise with your treating clinician as needed to ensure continuity of care.
Please contact the clinic prior to booking to confirm your eligibility and ensure your most recent blood results are available for review.
