Who Can Benefit from Seeing a Psychologist?

Psychology services are appropriate for individuals at every stage of life. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from speaking with a psychologist. Many people seek support to better understand themselves, develop healthier coping strategies, navigate a difficult period, or maintain their mental health over time.

Support may be particularly valuable for those experiencing ongoing stress, emotional difficulties, or significant life changes, and for anyone who wants to take a proactive approach to their mental wellbeing.

Medicare Rebates Through a GP Mental Health Care Plan

If you have a GP Mental Health Care Plan prepared by one of our GPs, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to ten individual psychology sessions per calendar year. See our dedicated Mental Health page for a full explanation of how this works and how to get started.

If you don't yet have a plan, our GPs can assess your eligibility and prepare one at a separate appointment. Speak with our Patient Advocates when booking to ensure everything is in place before your first appointment with Vanessa.

What to Expect at Your Psychology Appointment

During your initial consultation, Vanessa will take the time to understand your concerns, background, and what you are hoping to achieve. This includes a conversation about your current challenges, personal history, and relevant factors influencing your wellbeing. From there, you and Vanessa will work collaboratively to develop a tailored approach, drawing on evidence-based therapeutic strategies and practical tools.

Follow-up sessions provide continued support, allowing you to track your progress, refine your strategies, and maintain momentum. Your pace is respected throughout, and your care is shaped around what is working for you.

An Integrated Approach to Mental Health

What makes psychological care at Next Practice Newstead distinctive is the coordination between Vanessa and our GP team. Your GP and psychologist communicate directly, helping ensure your mental health care stays consistent and connected across your treating team.
